Over 70 teams from around the world including two from Singapore,
two comptetitions including the “World Inline Cup” and
CANAM, with two weeks of games in Edmonton Alberta Canada and Inline
Hockey Singapore’s Under 12 and Under 14 teams picked up a collective
three Medals. “we came to the World inline
Cup as learners not losers” says Barry Hanson the Founder of
Inline Hockey Singapore (IHS). “We came to learn as much as
possible by playing the best. We didn’t expect to win, in fact
we told the players that anything better than last place will be fantastic
and now we have won Gold in the B pool (ameteur division) of the CANAM
Cup, Gold in the U14 “C” division ahead of Namibia and
Chinese Taipei and then bronze in the U12 division of the WIC.. We
are so impressed with the players and support that we have received
from all the people involved especially the host city of Edmonton”
he continued.
It all started in February 2003 when 32 junior inline hockey players
were selected from a pool of over 100 to become part of history for
Singapore by competing in the World inline Cup and CANAM Cup held
in Canada, 3-13 July.
Months of training and preparation could hardly ready them for the
challenge they faced when they left Singapore on June 30th. Two weeks
away from home and parents, two international competitions, over 70
teams, all held in the 28 million dollar, grand “Tri-Leisure”
complex was daunting, however, the two teams, (under 14s and Under
12s) set off to make history as the first ever junior inline hockey
teams to compete in an international event. |
